Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Using case studies and theoretical treatises on indigeneity, students should learn about the inherent ambivalence of new social movements and anti-globalization discourses: The topic should be examined against the broader background of changes in the perception of social conflicts: What consequences arise for academic research if actors involved increasingly (also/primarily) interpret social distribution struggles as intercultural conflicts?
Furthermore, the question will be raised whether "indigeneity" fits into conventional cultural identity politics and is not rather a response to postcolonial political discrimination.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The performance assessment is not an end in itself, but is inextricably linked to the didactic methods of the course.
1. Each student gives a presentation once a semester (duration: 30 to 40 minutes) on a topic agreed in advance; the topics are within the scope of the content focus of the course listed above.
2. Each student works out the topic presented in writing in a short essay (approx. 5000 - 6000 characters). The short essay does not have to meet strict academic requirements in formal terms, but should, if possible, express the student's own pointed positions.
3. In the second half of the semester, each student writes a longer final paper (approx. 15,000 to 20,000 characters), which must focus on a different topic than the presentation and short essay. This is intended to ensure that the student participants are not only familiar with one single aspect of the semester topic. The paper must meet academic requirements in substance and in formal terms.
4. Attendance is compulsory in all units (6 units!): In principle, one can be absent from one of the units without an excuse, but - for organizational reasons - not from the first one. Participants are expected to actively participate in the units through discussion contributions, short written tasks and the like

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Oral presentation: 30%
Short essay: 20%
Final paper: 40%
Participation in the units: 10%

Regardless of this: compulsory attendance, attendance as such has no influence on the grade, but is a basic requirement for successful completion of the class

Prüfungsstoff

Due to the kind of performance assessemnt and the type of couse (seminar), there is no uniform exam material. The students are required to be tbe familiar with the topic they have dealt with orally or in writing, in a coherent and and methodologically appropriate manner.
