Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

NOTE: THIS IS A COURSE IN ADVANCED ATOMIC PHYSICS
It shall bring you from the level of the previous E3 class up to the state of modern research in atomic physics. (Advanced "optical" and "molecular" physics are part of separate courses in the coming semester/s)

Recap Atoms: E3 physics
Atom-Light interactions in a 2-level system
Three-level systems
Atom traps
Atom cooling
Bose Einstein condensation
Ultracold Fermi gases
Atoms in optical lattices
Atoms in ion traps
Atomic clocks
Atoms in optical cavities (Kimble/Rempe)
Rydberg atoms in Cavities (Haroche)
Symmetry violations in atomic physics
Anti-matter physics

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Weekly exercises (ungraded) establish the required feedback. Presence in 80% of the exercises is mandatory
A written test at the end (2 hours duration) decides on the grade.
You pass the test with >50% of all possible points
The scale above that is linear.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

1. Active attendance during 80% of all exercises is the admission requirement for the final test.
2. The final test is a 2 hours written exam. You pass with 50% of all possible points.
The grading scale above threshold is linear.
3. As required by the curriculum, there will be 6 possible test dates:
Date 1: last week of june, tba
Date 2: tba
Date 3. tba
Date 4: tba
Date 5: tba
Date 6. tba

Prüfungsstoff

All topics discussed in the lecture.
For this course we do not admit any "1 page cheat sheets" or other documents.
However, we do not expect lengthy proofs or derivations either. You should know the physics and be able to work with it to solve a problem.
