Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will provide an introduction to the Matlab toolbox MTEX, a powerful toolbox for the evaluation of orientation data, including spatially indexed orientation data such as EBSD maps, and X-ray pole figure data. It covers the installation of Matlab and MTEX, the basics of how the toolbox works, calculations with MTEX, the import and evaluation of EBSD data and the production of publication-ready plots. Other capabilities of MTEX will be demonstrated, such as the calculation and plotting of bulk elastic properties and seismic wave speeds from orientation data and the uses of MTEX for X-ray pole figure evaluation and plotting.

Attendance at the lecture is mandatory in order to pass the course (Anwesenheitspflicht). A maximum of two unexcused absences is allowed.
6 sets of practical exercise questions will be provided throughout the course. The mark for the course will be based on the answers to the 6 exercises along with the MATLAB code used, which must be submitted to Thomas Griffiths no later than 14.2.2020.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students understand the definition of vectors, crystallographic directions, planes and plane poles in MTEX. They can manipulate these classes of data using rotations and other operations. Students understand how crystallographic orientations and misorientations are defined and can create and manipulate such data in MTEX. Students are able to import EBSD data into MTEX, and carry out analysis and plotting of orientations in pole figures and inverse pole figures. Students are familiar with the concept of an ODF and can calculate and plot ODFs in various ways using MTEX. Students can also use MTEX to plot a variety of scalar and orientation-based data in EBSD maps, as well as analyse and plot grain boundaries, grain boundary misorientations, and other grain properties. Students are familiar with the wider capabilities of MTEX, including its capability to process X-ray pole figure data and its capability to work with various material property tensors.
