Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
A maximum number of 90 points can be awarded to students.Case study (total of 60 points):
Two milestone reports will be submitted by each group outlining the scope, approaches and processes relevant for the case studies (15 points each).
Each group will give a presentation (12 min) summarizing the main findings of the case study followed by a discussion on the outcome. Attendance is mandatory for all participants (30 points).Remediation of contaminated sites (30 points):
In addition to exercises coupled to the lectures, the students will be assigned topics for work, which aims at applying the concepts of selected remediation techniques. The presentation of these assignments will be evaluated according to
1) preparation of the topic
2) use of additional sources and information, also coupling to course content
3) quality of presentation
4) quality and level of the Q&A part of the presentationFurther details and dates will be announced on the first lecture and provided via Moodle.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
A total of 90 points can be reached.Grades for the “remediation part” will be given based on:
30% exercises
40% Presentations of remediation technologies
30% participation during the lectureThe points from the individual assessments are accumulated and the grade is applied to the total number of points reached during the semester. The following grading scheme will be applied:
% - Grade
> 87.5 1
75-87.49 2
62.5-74.99 3
50-62.49 4
0-49.99 5
This means that at least 50 % of the total points (i.e. 45 points) need to be accumulated to pass.

Case Study:
Two past environmental case studies will be presented. Two groups of students will be assigned to each case representing two perspectives/syndicates (i.e. industry & citizen/administration). By applying the skills and knowledge on environmental organic chemistry, the students job will be to grasp the problem, gather information and make subjective judgement representing their client's interest.Remediation of contaminated sites:
The students describe state-of-the-art techniques for the remediation or safeguarding of sites contaminated with environmental pollutants and assess key risks considering geo- and hydrochemical processes in a site-specific and solution-oriented manner. They are able to develop a concept for the assessment of an area of suspected contamination and can recall relevant sampling and analytical techniques. By comparison of measured values with current legislation and screening values they are able to suggest the necessary measures for safeguarding or decontamination.
The course is split into lectures with exercises, case studies and problem-oriented presentations of site remediation issues by students.
All relevant materials will be provided online in moodle.
