Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course provides an introduction to climate modeling, with a focus on the global climate model ICON. You will run ICON to study basic phenomena of climate dynamics. At the end of the lecture part, you will be able to explain technical aspects of the ICON model, e.g., the model grid, dynamical core and physics parametrizations. You will also have developed an understanding of hierarchical climate modeling. In the exercises, you will learn how to operate the ICON climate model. This can include changes to the model source code and boundary conditions. Possible model experiments include the climate response to a quadrupling of CO2, a climate with transparent clouds, and an Eyeball Earth. You will learn to evaluate and interpret the results to answer a scientific question.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The final grade will be calculated as follows:
20% multiple choice test (content: lecture part)
20% active participation and discussion
30% final presentation (30 mins)
30% final reportEach of the four components need to be completed. The four partial performances are each graded from 0-100%. A weighted average is used to calculate the percentage achieved, from which the final grade is calculated according to the grading scheme. You can earn a bonus of 10 percentage points for your final grade by describing your modeling efforts and results in a social media post, youtube video, blog post or similar. Note: the post does not need to be published to obtain the bonus, but needs to be shared with the lecturers.
