Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The research excursion focuses on the livelihoods of rural populations and their use and the importance of natural resources in northern Thailand. The aim of the research teaching is to introduce students to practical geographical development research by having them design and implement smaller research projects. This includes an introduction to the relevant social science research methods, the development of the research projects as well as their practical implementation and documentation.
The preparatory course to the excursion will entail a structured introduction to the political, cultural, social and economic context of northern Thailand, the collaborative planning of the research excursion, and the collaborative preparation of poster presentations in pairs of two with regard to the planned research projects.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The following requirements must be fulfilled in order to pass the course:
• regular attendance and active participation
• own research work
• in class poster presentation of a research topic
• final poster (to be submitted by 30 June, 2019)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance in at least 80% of the course sessions. In the case of illnesses that are confirmed by a doctor's note, additional absenteeism can be compensated by additional written assignments.
The overall grade for the class will consist of an in class poster presentation of a research topic (30%), active participation (30%), and the submission of a final poster (40%). All assignments have to be passed individually in order to pass the course. An assignment is passed with a minimum grade of 4.
Grading scheme:
100 - 87,5 % - grade 1
87,5 - 75 % - grade 2
75 - 62,5 % - grade 3
62,5 - 50 % - grade 4
less than 50% - grade 5

Prüfungsstoff

The examination will encompass the work items as outlined in the course requirements.
