Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Based on primary scientific literature, students familiarize themselves with a current research theme of Microbial Ecology. They present this subject to their peers and supervisors in a seminar lecture, which is followed by an open discussion of the topic. Subsequently, the attendants identify potentially interesting open scientific questions related to their topic and write a short research proposal, as if they were to obtain funding to pursue these scientific questions in a research project. Finally, this research proposal is presented in a second seminar talk and discussed with peers and supervisors.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Continuous assessment of course work. Quality and completeness of the first and second seminar presentations, and active participation in the discussions. Quality, originality, and completeness of the written short research proposal. The use of AI tools (large language models, e.g., ChatGPT) is allowed for writing the proposal and MUST be documented
A compulsory statement must be included with each proposal:
Either a signed statement that AI tools were not used for writing the proposal
OR
Indicate which tools were used for which purpose in which exact part of the proposal. Highlight these sections and indicate with a footnote which tool was used for which purpose. Provide a signed statement at the end summarizing which tools were used for which purpose, that these were the only uses of AI in preparing the proposal, and that you reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students learn to work with primary scientific literature, learn to design and give an oral presentation in the style of a lecture, and exercise scientific discussions. Attendants also learn to identify open scientific questions and challenges, and to design and formulate a research proposal as needed to obtain for example scholarships for research. Students are trained in orally presenting and defending a research proposal to a group of scientific peers and experts.
Prüfungsstoff
Satisfactory quality and completeness of the first and second seminar presentations, and active participation in the discussions. Satisfactory quality, originality, and completeness of the written short research proposal.
