Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

OBJECTIVE

To become aware of rhetorical strategies and stylistic tools and their impact on the listener. Students should be able to develop their own style in dealing with different subject-matter and types of (spoken) texts.

CONTENT

Using a variety of texts (including practical examples from a translator's desk) as well as recordings of spoken language (e.g. interviews, podcasts etc) we will analyse them and look at what makes them interesting and effective - or not.
METHODS

Weekly assignments. There will also be individual and group presentations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

mid-term test (30%),
end-of-term test (30%),
written and oral individual assignments (20%)
participation in class and homework (20%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Attendance is mandatory (two absences will be allowed).
An advanced level of both oral and written English is required.
Passing grade: 60%
Grading scale: ≥90% = 1, ≥80% = 2, ≥70% = 3, ≥60% = 4

Prüfungsstoff

Evaluation will be based on the genres and exercise formats used in class and in the online and home assignments.

Will be provided in class and on the Moodle platform.
