Exploration of English as a global lingua franca in various fields such as business, science, and international relations; varieties of English; the role of economic and political power; global and local identity and its linguistic manifestations; the pros and cons of having a global language; challenges of lingua-franca communication.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
End-of-term exam; exam in English; multiple choice. Dictionaries may be used.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
To introduce students to important concepts regarding lingua-franca communication and English as a global language; to raise students? awareness of the importance of being able to use English as a lingua franca; to highlight special issues that might arise when using English as a lingua franca; to accustom students to listening to theoretical concepts and practical examples concerning the use of English in international contexts.To increase
students' confidence in their use of English in professional contexts.

Prüfungsstoff
Lecture and presentation of contents. Course held in English. Students will be given an opportunity to practice comprehension and presentation skills.They will be encouraged to participate actively in illustrating practical communication contexts as a means of strengthening confidence in their ability to understand different communicative styles and to say what they want to say. However, participation will be voluntary and not be part of the final evaluation.
