Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Practice of various "micro" reading skills: reading for gist (general meaning) or skimming, searching for specific information or scanning, guessing unknown vocabulary, understanding "hidden" or implied meaning, summarising and paraphrasing parts of a text.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
There will be three elements of assessment:
1) Participation in class. Successful candidates must be judged to have been active and constructive participants in class.
2) Satisfactory completion of homework tasks, including being able to demonstrate regular "extensive" reading (reading of longer texts such as novels, plays, newspapers or journal articles) outside class
3) An assessment of reading comprehension and analysis skills at the end of the semester.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
To enable students to increasing their reading efficiency (both speed and comprehension), through analysing patterns in texts, identifying signposting language, building vocabulary through regular reading in class and out of class.
Prüfungsstoff
Students will approach written texts in a variety of ways. Apart from practicing and demonstrating comprehension through answering "comprehension questions", students will also be expected to summarise and present written texts they have found, relate different texts to each other, identify style and register.
