Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

OBJECTIVE
Development of personal writing skills; raising awareness of and understanding the needs of target groups and the impact that these have on text design and text writing; developing a personal approach to dealing with different types of texts and genres and getting a basic idea of translational concepts and strategies.
CONTENT
We will look at different types of texts and their requirements with special attention to various text functions and types, media, target groups, writing process(es), revision, and argumentation. Basic translation exercises towards the end of the semester.
METHODS
Written assignments, discussion, pair and group work, peer correction. Assignments will be prepared individually and in groups, completed at home and presented in class for discussion.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance is mandatory (two absences allowed if students provide plausible evidence).
Assessment will be based on the following:
- 1 short mid-term test (20%)
- 1 final test (30%)
- 1 written partner assignment (25%)
- 2 written individual assignments (25%)
Students are allowed to use a monolingual dictionary in exams.
Please note that the cut-off for overall positive grading at the end of the semester is 60%, which means that three of the above assignments have to be positive.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

- Excellent knowledge of working languages.
- Students are required to demonstrate that they can apply and possibly adapt the methods and strategies presented in class to new texts and genres.

Prüfungsstoff

Students will achieve the course objectives by:
- analysing and assessing a variety of texts (individual/group projects)
- writing, adapting/rewriting and optimizing texts for various situations, target groups and media
- reflecting on and discussing various steps in the text production process
- incorporating theoretical input given in class in their assignments and applying strategies and methods accordingly.
