Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The climate crisis is deepening and also other indicators of environmental destruction such as the loss of biodiversity are alarming. At the same time, international environmental politics gains importance but remains highly contested. In this seminar we will look at recent theoretical and empirical studies on the very understanding of the global ecological crisis (planetary boundaries, Anthropocene, Second Great Acceleration, a crisis of societal nature relations) and its dynamics as well as on approaches to global environmental politics (such as the recently published book by Peter Newell). Particular attention get recent debates within Political Ecology because it focuses particularly on the capitalist growth imperative as well as structures of power and inequality as causes of environmental destruction. It also conceptualises and looks empirically on provisioning systems such as mobility, food, clothing etc., their crisis and possible alternatives that foster social-ecological transformations.
The course will be held in English. It will take place during three days (24-26 May 2023) in a seminar house outside from Vienna (the cost for the seminar house, accommodation and excellent vegetarian food is about 120 Euro accommodated in a dormitory or 200 Euro in a single room in a hotel nearby).

Written work can be submitted in German, English or Spanish.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participants prepare a session on an agreed topic by proposing a text (which is then read by all in preparation), introducing the text at the seminar and moderating the discussion. The topic can also be directly related to one's own dissertation project. Group work is possible.
After the seminar, each participant writes an 8-12 page reflection paper.
