Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In the context of multiple global crises such as the climate, energy, economic, social, political, health and social reproduction crises triggered by the pandemic, societies in Latin America have experienced mayor political and social shifts in recent years. Political developments sparked important (theoretical) discussions within social sciences which transcended the region. Debates on (neo-) development strategies, neo and green extractivism, territoriality, alternatives to development, populism, decoloniality, postliberal and direct forms of democracy, transitional justice from below, radical transformation, food sovereignty and Latin American feminism are only a few topics which made Latin America to one of the most innovative research regions in recent years. The course attempts to take stock of these debates, situate them in a global context and assess possible research topics for the future.
The seminar will be held in English. However, participants can complete partial achievements in a language other than English (for example in German or Spanish). In the seminar we will focus on texts on recent social theoretical concepts and approaches from Latin America, as well as those that are currently being widely received there. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but not a prerequisite for participation. In addition, participants will have to present parts of their dissertation projects and receive feedback.
The seminar will take place as a block seminar from 14 - 17 June 2023. An introductory event will take place at the beginning of the summer semester. The date for this will be announced later.
