Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The doctoral seminar presents and discusses older and more recent methods and approaches that are often subsumed as "transnational history". The focus rests upon 1) comparative history, 2) the approach of transferts culturels/Transfergeschichte, and 3) the study of networks. The seminar will also deal with commonalities and differences with neighboring disciplines, in particular cultural studies and social sciences.
The participants will have the opportunity to attend a workshop on transnational history that is carried out in cooperation with Central European University and the Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum für Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas in Leipzig on November 29/30.
Moreover, the seminar prepares for the 7th annual Graduate Conference in European History (Graceh) that will take place at the CEU in April 2013 (support in choosing a topic, reacting to a competitive CfP, preparation of a speech, advice for publication).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Continuous attendance, participation in discussions, writing abstracts and papers

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Aside from the introduction into historical theory and methodology the seminar prepares successful applicants for the 5th Graduate Conference in European History (a CfP will be published and accessible at the webpage http://www.univie.ac.at/iog/perther.html - if you are interested in Graceh you need to apply) that is carried out in cooperation with the history departments at Central European University (Budapest) and the European University Institute (Florence). The topic of Graceh in the spring of 2011 will be "Transfers and Demarcations", i.e. nationalist and other counter-reactions against increasing international exchanges in modern Europe. Successful applicants from all three partner universities will be asked to present parts of their doctoral research in connection with the general topic of the conference
