Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Goal of the seminar is a critical review of recent scientific approaches in the humanities, by highlighting both the benefits and the pitfalls in formulating the historical research question. The so-called ‘bioarchaeological revolution’ as well as other crucial developments in geoarchaeological and archaeometric methods led to a new variety of sub-disciplines in archaeological and historical research in the last decades. The impact is not only visible in the change of research questions, but influences also project organization as well as funding, publication strategies and academic careers. State-of-the-art research has to deal with these developments and is challenged to create new practices in interdisciplinary sciences.
While the seminar is organized by two archaeologists (the Spokesperson of the Cluster ‘Archaeology and Material Culture’ of the Vienna Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies (DSHCS) and the Scientific Director of the ÖAI/ÖAW), PhD candidates and advanced Master’s students of all and any clusters within the DSHCS or inter faculty are warmly invited to actively participate and contribute to the seminar. We welcome a broadening of horizons to extend the scope beyond archaeology.
Science-based analysis in interdisciplinary studies and their role in developing new interpretative narratives are a key issue in the humanities today. This will be the major theme of discussion throughout the course.

Aims
-introduce current major scientific approaches in Archaeology/the Humanities
-explain paradigm shifts in current research
-increase critical arguments on benefits and pitfalls of interdisciplinary studies.
-discuss the challenges intrinsic within inter- and transdisciplinary studies.

Contents and Method
On the first date (3.10.2024) the course’s lecturers (Luciani and Horejs) will introduce the theme of the seminar by presenting and discussing different case studies.
In the following three dates each participant will be asked to present their own research, reflect critically on the implications and challenges each PhD candidate faces in their research project when dealing with interdisciplinary studies addressing socio-cultural and historical questions.
All class participants are expected to be discussants of all presentations throughout the four accorded dates

Erlaubte Hilfsmittel sind die Nutzung der fachwissenschaftlichen Fachliteratur (Print- und Digitalversionen), fachwissenschaftliche Medienformate (Ausstellungskataloge, kulturvermittelnde Führer/Folder/Flyer, Zeitungen, Magazine, Broschüren, Homepages und Social-Media-Formate mit seriösen archäologischen Inhalten), unter Umständen Wikipedia (nur als Einstieg in ein fachwissenschaftliches Thema erlaubt) sowie gegebenenfalls für nicht-muttersprachliche Studierende ein Wörterbuch. Die Verwendung von KI-Tools (z. B. ChatGPT) für die Produktion von Texten ist nur dann erlaubt, wenn dies von der Lehrveranstaltungsleitung ausdrücklich gefordert wird (z. B. für einzelne Arbeitsaufgaben). Sämtliche Hilfsmittel sind mit genauer Quellenangabe bzw. Zitaten anzuführen (siehe Zitier- und Publikationsrichtlinien).

100-87= 1 (very good), 86-75=2 (good), 74-63=3 (fair), 62-51= 3 (sufficient), 50-0= (fail)

Prüfungsstoff

The seminar will be held in English and German.
Students are expected to

-participate actively as discussants to all presentations by giving feedback on the presented themes
-prepare and one of the three dates at disposal give an oral presentation (max 20 min) on their research project and highlight (10 min) critically the pitfalls and challenges in developing the historical narrative.
-write up the presentation + feedback discussed in class.

During this process, students will learn the skills necessary for producing scientific presentations and research papers, including lecture presentation style, writing abstracts and outlines, and the parts of a scientific paper.

Assessment is based on (1) participation in discussions, (2) individual presentations, and (3) a final written paper.
