Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course gives an overview of research undertaken by physics graduate students. The course offers a place to connect with students from other groups and gain an understanding of the research directions in the respective fields. Furthermore, students will refine their presentation skills in the academic context. Students will enhance their collaboration skills by giving talks on research challenges they confront and discussing strategies to overcome them with their peers. Individual feedback by the course instructors and the other participants will be given for each presentation. Further skills regarding the design and presentation of posters will be acquired.
This course is open to students from theoretical, computational or experimental physics and to both PhD and MSc students. Where possible students are encouraged to present their own research projects. The language of communication is English.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Each student is required to give one scientific talk using presentation slides, create and present one scientific poster, complete occasional short assignments, provide active peer feedback and to critically discuss scientific feedback. The students are free to choose the software to create the slides and poster. In case COVID safety regulations force us to switch to distance learning we will continue the sessions on the given dates and times via Zoom on the Moodle platform.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Requirement for a positive grade: attendance (at most three sessions can be missed with prior explanatory statement), substitute achievements by agreement, giving one scientific talk using presentation slides, creating and presenting one scientific poster and answering to the scientific feedback.

The partial achievements are assessed according to the scientific soundness, accessibility for students from different fields and response to peer feedback:
- Active participation (peer feedback): 20 points
- Slide design: 15 points
- Slide presentation: 15 points
- Poster design: 15 points
- Poster presentation: 15 points
- Assignments: 20 points
The grading will follow the scheme:
- 1 (excellent) 100 – 90 points
- 2 (good) 89 - 81 points
- 3 (satisfactory) 80 – 71 points
- 4 (sufficient) 70 – 61 points
- 5 (insufficient) 60 – 0 points
