Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course gives an overview of research undertaken by physics graduate students. The course offers a place to connect with students from other groups and gain an understanding of the research directions in the respective fields. Furthermore, students will refine their presentation skills in the academic context. Students will enhance their collaboration skills by giving talks on research challenges they confront and discussing strategies to overcome them with their peers. Individual feedback by the course instructors and the other participants will be given for each presentation. Further skills regarding the design and presentation of posters will be acquired.
This course is open to students from theoretical, computational or experimental physics and to both PhD and MSc students. Where possible students are encouraged to present their own research projects. The language of communication is English.

Dear course participants,

Artificial intelligence (AI, such as "ChatGPT") can be a helpful tool to complement the creative process and independent thinking. In this seminar, we want to encourage you to keep a critical approach in this regard. Thus,
1. We will add on Moodle material on AI related copyright on text and images and usage rules, please read them!
2. When you use AI, please tell us. We want to know how it supported your creative process.
3. Question the gained information thoroughly
These rules apply throughout the seminar, including all additional project work related to the seminar."

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Each student is required to give one scientific talk using presentation slides, create and present one scientific poster, complete occasional assignments, provide active peer feedback and to critically discuss scientific feedback. The students are free to choose the software to create the slides and poster.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Each student is required to have a positive evaluation to the following tasks:
- create and present one novel scientific talk on a research topic of interest
- create and present one novel poster on a research topic of interest
- create and present one outreach short presentation on a research topic of interest
- short assignments (e.g. abstract, slide improvement,...)
Attendance and active participation is required: at most three sessions can be missed with prior explanatory statement.
The partial achievements are assessed according to the scientific soundness, accessibility for students from different fields, use of the methods and response to teacher's and peer's feedback.

The partial achievements are assessed according to the scientific soundness, accessibility for students from different fields and response to peer feedback:
- Slide design: 15 points. The students will be evaluated on the latest version of the slides, modified after the feedback in class.
- Slide presentation: 10 points.
- Poster design: 15 points. The students will be evaluated on the latest version of the poster, modified after the feedback in class.
- Poster presentation: 10 points.
- Outreach presentation: 10 points.
- Active participation (peer feedback): 20 points
- Assignments: 20 points

The grading will follow the scheme:
- 1 (excellent) 100 – 90 points
- 2 (good) 89 - 81 points
- 3 (satisfactory) 80 – 71 points
- 4 (sufficient) 70 – 61 points
- 5 (insufficient) 60 – 0 points
