Content, aims and methods

The course examines the profile, role and potential for action of the European Union on the international stage as well as the challenges and limitations faced by a common EU foreign policy.
The EU regulates its external relations with states, regions and supranational organizations through instruments such as enlargement policy, neighbourhood policy, strategic partnerships, common foreign and security policy, development cooperation and humanitarian aid. Economic aspects and the role of the EU as an economic power also play an important role in this context.
Selected dimensions of this comprehensive thematic spectrum will be discussed - according to the interests of the participants and on the basis of current international problems (e.g. wars and international conflicts, humanitarian crises, ecological disasters, etc.).
In the first course unit, a decision will be made together with the participants as to which areas to focus on.

The aim is to critically reflect on the political context conditions (scope for action and limitations), processes and phenomena that determine the EU's profile as an actor on the international stage.

Lecture with workshop elements: The course is a mixture of lecture and seminar and combines input units from the lecturer with interactive elements (group work on specific tasks) and presentations by the students (in smaller teams on a course-related topic of their choice).

- Elaboration and 15-minute plenary presentation of a self-chosen topic in smaller teams (2-3 students) - 25%
- Written examination in the form of an essay (4000-5000 characters) - students can choose one of the three proposed topics - 50%
