The seminar provides a sociological examination of structure and change in European societies. From a comparative perspective, social structure transformations in various European societies will be discussed. Particular emphasis is given to issues of social and regional inequalities, interesections of class, gender and race, processes of metropolitanization and peripheralization (including the urban-rural-gap), national and transnational welfare regime development, migration and asylum.
Learning objectives
Development of a critical and comparative understanding of European societies in transformation. Knowledge of relevant research-based literature, including theories and concepts of Europeanization. Capacity in researching and interpreting empirical data from international, European and national sources. Knowledge of European policy and institutional development in main (above mentioned) areas of social change.
