Aims, contents and method of the course

If one tries to speak of God in a fundamentally theological way, one faces big problems as well as great tasks. Because of the fact that it has become a growing problem to speak assertively of God a new approach to negative theology is possible and obvious after historical crisis and face to face with contemporary crisis. This is not meant to be fleeing these crisis (redemption that had not become real; religious violence), but to renew the access to the wisdom of Israel confessing the one and real God and its human consequences.

Contents of the course
The course deals with the following topics:
- Substitution of God through (religious) terror and different kinds of heroism
- The relevance of the essential difference between God and man
- Naturalistic ideologies as presupposition of modern atheism
- Characteristics of idols, their omnipresence, and the God of liberation
- God, sacrifice, and reconciliation
- Idols and space, ban of images and time
- Prayer as testimony of the biblical God and rebellion, anger, protest, thanks, and acceptance as its main incentives
- God and Shabbat

Main aims of the course
The main targets of this course are the knowledge of:
- the problem of substituting God in a time that tends to lose the faith in him
- the connection between modern naturalism and atheism
- the reasons of overstressing man’s capability leading him to idolizing himself
- the connection between religious ideologies, sacrifices, victims, and abusing God
- the eminent relevance of the biblical ban of images
- prayer as one of the basic testimonies of God
- the legitimation of struggling with God and even against God for God’s sake

Method of the course
Lecture, discussion, summaries of each lecture on Moodle platform.

IT IS ALSO INTENDED TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FEEDBACK ON THE CONTENTS AND THEIR DISCUSSION. Oral exam of 15 minutes, each on at least four examination dates (see https://st-tgf-ktf.univie.ac.at/studium/pruefungstermine/wolfgang-treitler/) as well as in every office hour of the following semester (registration via email to wolfgang.treitler@univie.ac.at)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Comprehensive understanding of the topics of the lecture - for a positive mark at least 50% of the given answers must be correct.

Examination topics
