Aims, contents and method of the course

Due to the progress of biotechnology and the change in our social value structure, bioethical issues have become an integral part of our lives. This lecture expands on the lecture "Basic Course 2: Ethics of Life" [summarized in Gerhard Marschütz, theologisch ethisch nachdenken Band 2 which is the requested basic knowledge] and broadens the range of bioethical topics. Central ethical questions arising from the further development of medical and bioethical technologies will be dealt with in the lecture:
Challenges in dealing with human life in its beginnings (e.g. in-vitro fertilization, prenatal diagnostics, pre-implantation diagnostics, but also around genetic diagnostics and genetic manipulation with the CRISPR-Cas9 method) or at the end of life (brain death diagnosis and organ transplantation, forms of euthanasia, the current debate on assisted suicide, palliative medicine). Beyond humans, other bioethical questions concern the treatment of animals and plants as well as ecological issues.
The lecture combines lecture, short films and discussion or short units with group work.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination (10-15 min); in person or online.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Reproduction of the material covered and the literature provided (exam questions for processing the material are given). Contents: Scientific and medical knowledge relevant to the subject matter. Knowledge of bioethical and theological arguments in order to be able to justify decisions. Ability to justify one's own position. Interdisciplinary thinking required. The oral examination can be graded positively if 50% of the questions are answered and the sub-grades for the individual questions result in an overall average of 4.0.
