Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture referres on four topics:
1. If we look back into the history we can see that religion was always in favour of arts, brought them up, and promoted them. The manners of arts that have been promoted by a special religion also helps to explain what a religion thought of itself.
2. Arts helped to spread religious thoughts and made them popular even in societies that hardly had the knowlegde of reading and writing.
3. Later on arts turned once and a while against religion. And this goes on. One can see it when it comes to discuss on arts in public aeras. Some feel that a specific work of art has an access to blasphemy.
4. But still, there seems to be one common issue between arts and religion: the struggle for humanity. Maybe this is the very (last) consensus between them in an open society.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam on fixed appointments and, if necessary, during office hours.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim is to understand the relation between religion and arts as well as its difficult history that even led to a blame against arts in connection with blasphemy. But still it should be known and realized that even through antagonism between both ways of living and realizing the world are able to keep on going on the path of humanity and struggling for it.
