Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Erich Przywara once described St Augustine as the “genius of European thought” insofar as he was both the source of conflicting theological motifs and at the same time above this struggle. The aim of the research seminar is to identify fundamental motifs of Augustinian thought, which were effective not only in spiritual theology. At the same time, the history of Augustine's reception and impact will be illustrated based on theological (and philosophical) authors from different eras and analysed in terms of their relevance to contemporary issues. The method of the seminar is based on the reading and discussion of selected source texts, which are presented by the participants partly as a presentation and partly in the mode of a contrasting disputatio. The importance of Augustine for monastic life will be explored in greater depth with a one-day excursion to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery in Herzogenburg. The date for the excursion (28/29 april or 26/27 May) is subject to change, but will be finalised shortly. The course will be taught in German; basic knowledge of Latin, French and English may be helpful, but is not essential.
Assessment and permitted materials
The overall result is composed of oral (active participation, presentation/disputation) and written components (written seminar paper). The seminar paper to be completed at the end of the semester has a length of approx. 50,000 characters (including spaces; approx. 20 A4 pages).
By registering for the course, students agree to a possible software-supported plagiarism check of their written assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The minimum requirement is a positive overall assessment resulting from the grades of the individual oral and written components.Partial course work includes
- the writing of a seminar paper (60%)
- the presentation of a topic or the preparation and realisation of a "disputatio" (20%)
- regular participation (20%).The grading system is 1-5 in descending order (1=very good; 5=insufficient).The grading is broken down as follows:
100-87% = 1
86-75% = 2
74-63% = 3
62-51% = 4
≤ 50% = 5
Grade 5 will be given to those who score 50% or less.
An attendance requirement of 80% applies to the course. If attendance is below this, a major assessment criterion is not met.
