    Information

    Aims, contents and method of the course

    Canon law is a function of ecclesiology, and all Orthodox Churches share a common tradition of canon law that dates to the early church and the Byzantine empire. This canonical tradition is the foundation of the organization and governance of the Orthodox Churches and their particular law.

    This course will historically and systematically present the common sources of Orthodox canon law, the principles for the interpretation and application of the sources of Orthodox canon law, and the canonical principles of church organization and governance.

    The students are expected to study the required literature on their own and voluntarily participate in lectures given by the teacher.

    After finishing the course, the student will:

    - be familiar with the common sources of Orthodox canon law;

    - know how to interpret and apply the sources of Orthodox canon law;

    - be able to reflect on how the common canonical tradition is received and implemented in the particular law of individual Orthodox Churches and in inter-Orthodox and ecumenical relations.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    The students will be graded on a written test and paper that can be submitted in English or German. The students may consult the literature and lecture notes while writing the test and paper.
