Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to convey the various foundations and sources of theology as a whole and of systematic theology in particular with regard to their specific meaning on the basis of a systematic-genetic concept of theology, and to gain a concept of theology that can be maintained in a critical way. Connected with this, the lecture series reflects on theological principles that are relevant due to the discourse with Judaic tradition, that entail special theological educational tasks, and that concern the status of theology as a contemporary science, its discursivity, and its claims of truth.

The course deals with the following contents and topics:
- Theology - a Christian development
- Foundations of theology: revelation and faith as a principle of knowledge; the relationship between reason and faith; validity of scripture, tradition, teaching authority, and practice.
- Practice of theology
- "Knowledge of the Holy One / Da'at haShem as principle
- Discourse - disparity - tuth/applicability

Methods:
- Present-oral lecture, presentations, digital recording; discussions in the lecture hall
- The lectures and the summaries of each topic will be available on Moodle platform.

Assessment and permitted materials

The examinations will be oral and face-to-face(15 min., consisting of two independent question or topics) and can be done based either on the topics of the lectures or on the substitute literature. The registration for these dates is done by the students via U:Space and after that in a time list on TEMPUS. In addition, an oral examination can be taken in any office hours of the following semester upon advance registration by email (wolfgang.treitler@univie.ac.at). The grade will be added to the next officially announced examination date.
The examination for this course can be taken until the end of the winter semester 2024/25.
Permitted aids during the examination: none.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A positive assessment of the exam is achieved if at least 50% of the two questions that are asked for the exam are correct. - The examination performance is assessed as "very good" if the knowledge of the examination material is clearly above the average expected level of knowledge and independent, well-founded insights are brought in.
