Aims, contents and method of the course

Description
The liturgical life of the Eastern Orthodox Churches is one of the major liturgical traditions dating back to the Early Church. This liturgical tradition is also known as the Byzantine rite and is also the liturgical tradition of some of the Eastern Catholic Churches. This course will focus on the historical development of the Byzantine rite, important theological themes in worship (lex orandi), and the structure and interpretation of worship.

Learning activities
Individual study of literature and presentations by the teacher.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be graded on a written test and paper that can be submitted in English or German.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mandatary reading of literature. Optional participation in lecture. Written test and essay in English or German.
1 (sehr gut) -> 100-89 points
2 (gut) -> 88-76 points
3 (befriedigend) -> 75-63 points
4 (genügend) -> 62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend) -> 49-0 points

Examination topics

Learning outcomes
• Students will know a general outline of the history the Byzantine rite and worship in the Early Church
• Students will be able to recognize and describe the structure of the celebration of the sacraments, other acts of worship, and the liturgical year in the Byzantine rite
• Students will be able to identify and reflect on important theological themes (lex orandi) in the Byzantine rite
