Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The subject of this introductory course is a concise synopsis of Buddhist traditions in history and the present. Emphasis is placed on the historical spread since the origins; on the doctrinal development within the framework of numerous school formations; and on modern and contemporary developments, which are described with terms such as "Buddhist Modernism" and "Engaged Buddhism". Aspects of the material dimension are also taken into account. Buddhist terminology and vocabulary are introduced in a discussion of Buddhist doctrine and philosophy; central concepts are examined in depth. The course is rounded off by reflections on current events — on Buddhism and ecology as well as Buddhism and sexuality.
