Jürgen Habermas' book on the "structural change of the public sphere" (1962/1990) focused on the emergence of a bourgeois public sphere from the 17th century to the tendencies of a renewed power-related change of the public sphere in the 20th century. Today, this critical perspective on the conditions of social order through public communication is being made strong again in the context of digitalisation and digital media: a new structural change has begun that is changing the relationship between the public sphere and democracy.
In the seminar, we will deal with texts on this new structural change as gathered in the thematic issue of "Leviathan" (issue special volume 37, 2021).
Objectives:
The reading and discussion of the texts in the seminar should enable the participants to gain an intensive knowledge of the academic debate on the structural change of the public sphere. The intensive reading should also lead to students acquiring in-depth knowledge of scientific work and writing.
Course methods:
Joint reading and discussion of texts after intensive preparation (individual contribution). All texts are read by everyone beforehand, an impulse or presentation by students opens the sessions.
Please take the workload of the seminar into account in your planning: In addition to attending the seminar, you should expect 4.5 hours of active reading per week.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, changes to courses may be necessary at short notice (e.g. cancellation of on-site teaching). It is essential that you register for courses via u:space, find out about the current status on u:find and on the moodle learning platform.
