    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is aimed at students of Theology and Religious Studies, in particular those studying for a Master's degree in Advanced Theological Studies or a doctorate. It offers an (in-depth) introduction to the rules of academic work (in German-speaking countries and at our faculty). Contents include: the use of (German) theological terms, library skills, literature research, working with sources, bibliography and citation (with an introduction to Citavi 6), writing academic papers, oral presentations and handouts, the Moodle learning platform, criteria of academic argumentation and a culture of critical and appreciative feedback.

To improve your personal writing skills, please refer to the mentoring programme for academic writing that is regularly offered (among others) at the Faculty of Protestant Theology and the Faculty of Catholic Theology: https://ctl.univie.ac.at/angebote-fuer-studierende/waehrend-des-studiums/schreibmentoring/ueberblick-ueber-alle-studienrichtungen/evangelische-theologie/

    Assessment and permitted materials

    • Preparation for the classes
    • Homework according to the assignment (e. g. definition of theological terms, literature research, bibliography, writing assignment, handout)
    • Correct handling of academic literature (reading and structuring texts, familiarisation with theological terms, summarising academic texts) and avoiding plagiarism
    • Presentation (on a self-chosen or assigned topic) with PowerPoint presentation and handout
    • Oral participation (discussions, feedback)
    • Elaboration of the topic of the presentation into a short written paper of approx. 20,000 characters (i. e. 8–10 pages) at the end of the course

The permitted materials will be announced in each case. By registering for the course, students agree to a possible software-supported plagiarism check of their written work.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement is a positive overall assessment resulting from the grades of the individual oral and written components. Each partial performance must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall assessment.
One third of the grade is based on the oral participation and the presentation, another third on the homework and one third on the seminar paper. The overall grade is calculated from the arithmetic mean of these three partial grades.
An attendance requirement of 80% applies to the course. If attendance is below this, a major assessment criterion is not met and therefore the course cannot be credited.

    Examination topics

The overall grade is calculated from the assessments of the individual oral and written components (see "Assessment and permitted materials" and "Minimum requirements and assessment criteria").
