Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This intensive seminar marks the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights in order to assess the state of human rights in the world today. Although the human rights discourse is often seen as the only ethical and legal discourse that has the universal appeal and reach in the contemporary world, a more careful engagement with this discourse demonstrates that its universality is brought into question by a whole range of theoretical and practical challenges. These challenges (for instance, postmodernity, pluralistic perspectives, practical denial of human rights, etc.) reveal the tension between universality and particularity of human rights, but instead seeing the two (universality and particularity) as necessarily in conflict or opting for one of them, the seminar is going to explore the possibility of a dialectical and mutually enriching relationship between them.
