Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course “Introduction to Catholic Theology I” deals with main topics of Christian teaching and European thinking. It is focused on Theology and Christology. Both are developed in respect of Jesus of Nazareth who is the very foundation of Christian Theology and the essential link of Christianity to God’s eternal covenant with Israel, because he was a Jew, not a Greek or a Roman. That is why the course also deals with the Christian relationship to Judaism in history and present days, a relation heavy to bear for Jews because of Christian theology and its consequences. Since the 2nd Vatican Council this burden has been recognized at least, although it is still a very long way for Christian Theology to get along with Jesus as a Jew and Judaism as a partner for Christian thinking and teaching.

MAIN OBJECTS: Knowledge of the tasks, important topics, and methods of systematic theology as well as its inner connection to the historical and contemporary Judaism due to Jesus of Nazareth.
CONTENS:
- Main issues of systematic theology
- Relation between Christianity and Judaism as a decisive fact for Christian self-evidence
- Main stages of ecclesiastical teaching as guidelines of theology in general
- Important thinkers of Christian history, their topics, coincidences, and arguments
- God's revelation through Israel and Jesus; the eternal covenant
- Theology in contemporary European society and its resistance to modern idols
METHOD: Oral lecture; Moodle platform summarizing each lecture; theological discussions.

UPDATE:
AS A RESULT OF THE MEASURES TAKEN IN THE WAKE OF THE COVID19 CRISIS, THE LECTURE WILL BE DELIVERED DIGITALLY VIA THE LEARNING PLATFORM MOODLE. ON THE PLATFORM YOU WILL NOW ALSO FIND ONE AND A HALF HOUR LECTURES IN MP3-FORMAT, WHICH ARE ACTIVATED AT THE TIME OF THE LECTURE AND ARE A HELPFUL AID FOR THE SUMMARIES AND LITERATURE REFERENCES (GENERAL AND TOPIC-RELATED). IT IS ALSO INTENDED TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FEEDBACK ON THE CONTENTS AND THEIR DISCUSSION. YOU WILL RECEIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE FORM OF THE FEEDBACK AT THIS PLACE AND ABOUT U:SPACE AS SOON AS THE PLANUNG IS COMPLETED. (March 30th, 2020).
