Aims, contents and method of the course

Main goals:
The students should become clear
- which historical, religious, educational and political conditions became decisive for the defintion of Jesus Christ as the Godman,
- the impact of this definition on monotheism
- how the rabbinic reactions to this definition can be interpreted
- and how, in view of the problems of Jesus as the Davidic Messiah and as the Godman, a messianic view of him is possible that was already present in early Christianity: Jesus as the Messianic Son of Joseph.

- Christ and the Emperor: Ambrose of Milan
- Failure of a small revision: Council of Chalkedon (451)
- Jewish-Christian disputes over monotheism
- Jesus in rabbinical perception
- Messiah - Son of David
- Messiah - son of Joseph
- Jesus Christ, son of Joseph and gate of the covenant

Methods:
- Lecture, accompanied by presentations; expert discussions
- Topic-centered discussion of the contents of the overview sheets on Moodle.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral examination, 15 min.

The course examination is held either in German or in English.
Minimum requirements for students for a positive assessment: Rough overview knowledge of the individual content fields.

DUE TO THE MEASURES OF THE COVID19 CRISISIS, ORAL EXAMINATIONS WILL BE DIGITALLY PROCESSED THROUGH THE PLATFORM https://meet.jit.si/ ACCORDING TO THE EXAMINATION DATES THAT ARE ALREADY ADVERTISED. THE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE FOR THE EXAM REMAINS THE SAME. THIS EXAMINATION MODE IS VALID AS LONG AS THE PANDEMIA MEASURES REMAIN MANDATORY. (March 30th, 2020)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The oral exam consists of at least two independent questions or subject areas. A positive assessment of the examination is achieved when the broad outlines of the subject areas have been covered and each part of the examination has been passed. - The examination performance is assessed as "sehr gut / very good" if the knowledge of the examination material clearly exceeds the average expected level of knowledge and if own, well based insights are brought in.
