    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class examines classic works of theological ethics, from the Bible and early Church Fathers to modern and contemporary ethicists, and including a few works of fiction as well. Each biweekly seminar will be organized around a single topic, such as death, forgiveness, or love, considering various aspects of the topic and the ethical problems it generates. The goal of each class meeting will be to gain a greater understanding of a fundamental dimension of human life, particularly (but not exclusively) from the Christian perspective.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    Active participation and attendance (30%)
A key component of this seminar will be in-class discussion. It is therefore essential that participants do the reading and show up for class ready to discuss the material. I will keep track of who participates, and how frequently, and this will be an important component of your final grade.

    Presentation (30%)
Students present a text(s) and lead a discussion on it. Students should make sure to cover the material they are assigned, but they should also think of themselves as presenting on the topic of the week. So, if you present on pandemics, for example, you should try to cover some of the basics of pandemics.

    Seminar paper (40%)
Students write a seminar paper, generally (but not necessarily) on the topic of their presentation. During one of our class meetings, we’ll discuss writing academics papers—what to do and what to avoid, and what tools will assist you.
    • Length: 25,000-30,000 characters including spaces, footnotes, and references.
    • By registering for the course, you agree to a possible plagiarism check of your written work in Moodle using the software Turnitin.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To earn credit for this class, you must attend at least 85% of class meetings and receive a positive assessment on all required tasks (participation, presentation, and seminar paper).

    Examination topics

Texts will be slowly added to this list in the coming month. Excepts from both the Old and New Testament will be featured throughout the semester, as will classic figures (e.g., Augustine and Aquinas) and contemporary authors (e.g. Paul Griffiths). We will also read a few works of fiction.
