Aims, contents and method of the course

Theme: The Five Scrolls/Megilloth (Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther)

Content: Exegetical research on selected texts from the Five Scrolls of the Hebrew Bible. (Selection from texts is open. Requests from students is open.)

Objectives: Increase knowledge of the major content, themes, and exegetical issues in the books of Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, and Esther. Develop greater proficiency in exegetical work and presenting in an English-speaking environment. Increase competency in creating a research bibliography.

Method: Short lectures by students, Hebrew translation, exegetical tasks, and discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Class participation (40%); Exegetical Presentations on Biblical Texts (40%); Bibliography Assignment (20%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Moderate English-language proficiency. Previous classwork in Biblical Hebrew. Regular attendance (no more than two absences) and active class participation.
