Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar focusing on the beginnings of Christianity in Rome has the central theme: "Between hagiography and history". Even the beginnings of the church are described in legendary form in the Acts of the Apostles of Peter and Paul; this continues with traditions about other people such as scholars, bishops and especially martyrs. There are also several legendary versions of the conversion of Emperor Constantine (vision/audition before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge against Maxentius; Acts of St. Sylvester). This is reflected in the places of veneration, the ecclesiastical buildings and their dedications. The question of what is historically conceivable and in what context the legendary texts originated remains exciting. This is precisely the topic of the seminar, which also serves as preparation for the excursion.
Assessment and permitted materials
The performance assessment consists of three parts, each of which must be successfully completed:
(a) Preparation / attendance / discussion contributions (30%; 1 ECTS);
b) Short presentation with handout and participation in discussion (30%; 1 ECTS);
c) seminar paper (40%) on a topic from the seminar. A short version of the paper is to be transferred to the audio guide for the excursion.
The seminar paper (long version approx. 20 pages) must be submitted by April 15, 2025 at the latest (2 ECTS).
