UPDATE
Dear students,
as teaching and exams will continue to be carried out by "distant teaching", I ask you to study the exam material on your own, using the materials provided on moodle; if you have any questions, please contact me by mail (uta.heil@univie.ac.at)! In mid-June, on 16.6 during the lecture hours, I will offer another online meeting! Dates for oral video exams are 30.6.; 1.7.; 15.7. and 16.9. Please write me the desired day by mail - this is also an agreement for this exam modality - and I will assign a time to you! The examination will be a 20-minute conversation about the lecture topics ( please consult the lecture plan of the semester with the listed keywords); you may choose a topic to start with.

Please follow this checklist when preparing and taking the exam:
Please check in advance whether the examination has been carried out via video chat and whether the lecturers/students have agreed to it and note this in the examination protocol at the beginning of the examination.
Identification via video chat: Have the student ID shown, check the picture on the ID and the person.
Announce that the examination will be cancelled by the lecturer if there is a suspicion that unauthorised aids are being used. Make a note of the student's consent to this.
Have the room with the camera swivelled out, trusted persons on the student side should sit behind the candidate in the field of vision of the camera and the examiners.
Due to the current exit restrictions (as of 15.3.) online examinations can only be held without the physical presence of another examiner if the equipment is available and all participants agree. The exam can be held in video chat with one examiner and one observer from the circle of the instructors (three participants). Test the feasibility beforehand by asking colleagues to join in from the home office. Note the specific situation in the examination protocol.
In the case of online exams for commissions, examiners must be able to join in from different rooms. In this case, advice on the examination results is given without students. Immediately afterwards, you should announce the result by e-mail.
For the time without exit restrictions: It is advisable to have another person present on the examiners' side, who can observe students, whether their gaze is wandering, whether there is a suspicion that information is being read or whether a person is speaking in the background and can also confirm that the exam was conducted in accordance with the law.
Conduct the examination and keep a detailed examination protocol.
Dealing with technical problems: Student*r cannot log in, connection is interrupted: Here you should be accommodating (log out without consequence or possibility of repetition).

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture offers an overview of "The Church in the course of 1000 years between 450 and 1450 A.D." and is held as a lecture with discussion:

I. Until 600 A.D. (Migration period; Synod of Orange 529; Benedictine monasticism; Boethius; Cassiodor; Dionysius Exiguus; Gregor the Gr.; Fulgentius of Ruspe; Isidor of Seville)

II to 750 A.D. (Ascent of the Carolingians; Ascent of Islam; Concilium Germanicum; Irish and Anglo-Saxon Mission; Boniface)

III to 900 A.D. (Charlemagne/Carolingian; Saxon mission; Carolingian reform; Adoptianism dispute; Eucharist dispute; Predestination dispute; Debate about filioque; Alkuin; Paulus Diaconus; Einhard; Hrabanus Maurus)

IV. Up to 1000 (Ottonians; Ottonian "imperial church system"; Cluny monastery; Gorze monastery; Mission; Widukind von Corvey)

V. Until 1300 A.D.; High Middle Ages (Investiture Controversy I; 1054 Schisma; Crusades; New Orders; Scholasticism; Papacy, the Lateran Councils and Investiture Controversy II)

Assessment and permitted materials

The examination is carried out in the form of an oral examination (20 min.); no aids are allowed.
Date: Wednesday 1 July 2020 from 9 a.m. (list will be available at the secretariat for registration); further date: 16 September.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should be able to name and describe central topics and developments in response to generalizing questions about the lecture material. A subject area can be chosen as a starting point.

Examination topics

The students gained an in-depth insight into the events, developments and themes of the history of Christianity between 450 and 1450 AD.
This lecture material is the examination material.
