Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) is one of the most famous personalities of the Middle Ages. When, at the age of 25, he, the son of a rich merchant, gave himself up to a penitential life of radical poverty, he soon won many followers and devotees who were attracted and convinced by his personal charism. To this day, his appearance and work are far more significant for the Franciscan identity than the rules of the order. Therefore, not only did Francis himself become Christ-like because of his striving to follow Christ, but also the literary presentation of his life in the various Vites requires a historical-critical approach similar to the question of the historical Jesus.
In the seminar, excerpts from the Vites will be read in comparison as well as their iconographic programm in the double church of S. Francesco, Assisi, will be considered. In addition, texts written by Francis himself, especially his testament, will be consulted.

Method: Under guidance, primarily primary source texts will be analyzed, which each participant will have to prepare independently. Presentations on supplementary secondary literature are to be given. An own term paper applies this to a self-selected topic in an own analysis.

The practical implementation will be adapted to the classroom teaching, depending on the possibilities.

Assessment and permitted materials

The performance evaluation consists of three parts, each of which must be completed with a positive result:
a) Preparation / attendance / contributions to discussions (40%; 2 ECTS);
b) presentation with handout (20%; 0,5 ECTS);
c) Seminar paper (40%; 2,5 ECTS) on a topic from the seminar.
The seminar paper (approx. 20 pages) must be handed in by 1 April at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All three partial performances must be completed positively.The overall grade is calculated by converting the partial grades as a proportion (see above).
