Aims, contents and method of the course

The confrontation with heresies - both with heretical teachings and with heretics - occupies a large part of the history of Christianity. The developments in Christianity in antiquity/late antiquity were decisive: not only did a new concept of heresy emerge during this period, which no longer describes a philosophical school but a false conviction, but many anti-heresy works were also written.
In the seminar, the two important and lengthy heretical catalogues (Augustine, De haeresibus; Epiphanius, Panarion) will be used to compare the presentation of selected heresies on the basis of these works. In addition, an attempt will be made to look behind the scenes of the anti-heresy representations in order to understand the concerns and theses of a particular heresy in its "original tone".
The methodological aim is to develop a critical awareness of the transmission and representation of anti-heresy portraits and to train in the historical-critical analysis of historical source texts.
Each participant in the seminar prepares the relevant source texts; short presentations are possible. The theses of each heresy are to be defended or rejected in the form of a disputation.

Assessment and permitted materials

The examination consists of three parts, each of which must be successfully completed:
a) Preparation / attendance / discussion contributions (30%; 1 ECTS);
b) Short presentation with handout and participation in disputation (30%; 1 ECTS);
c) seminar paper (40%) on a topic from the seminar.
The seminar paper (approx. 20 pages) must be submitted by 15 September 2024 at the latest (2 ECTS).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All three partial performances must be completed positively.The overall grade is calculated by converting the partial grades as a proportion (see above).
