Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar intends to examine the Madaba Map, a privileged source for Biblical and Historical topography with specific insights to the archaeology of sites mentioned in the map and their connection to pilgrim routes and pilgrim itineraries. Since its early discovery in 1887, the map proved to be a unique surviving mosaic of the Holy land and the neighbouring territories of modern Lebanon and Egypt. It dates to the middle or the second half of the 6th century and covered originally an area of 22 by 7 metres in size. The map generally follows the Onomasticon of Eusebius of Caesarea (ca. 260-340) and is an important document on sanctuaries and pilgrim sites in the Holy land, it gives a detailed plan of Jerusalem and numerous place-names in the Negev that are not mentioned in other sources. The discussion will consider how and to which extent the Map offers insight to Old and New Testament sites, how it traces local veneration, and how Bible and Biblical knowledge were disseminated in Early Byzantium.
