Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to introduce the most important legal and ethical principles of medicine to the students in the preliminary discussion and to apply these to the setting of the prison in the subsequent units. In addition to the special characteristics and challenges in the preservation of the health of incarcerated persons in Austrian prisons, a glance will also be taken at other institutions that are characterized by restrictions on freedom. The course offers a space for discussion. The course content is conveyed through lectures by the course instructors, short presentations by the students, and guest lectures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Compulsory participation and attendance: Active participation of the students in discussions and exercises during the course as well as

Short presentation in small groups: Students give a short presentation on a given topic or a topic agreed upon with the course instructors. The presentation includes a PowerPoint presentation and a short handout. The literature for the presentations will be researched independently by the students.

Short test: (Date will be discussed in the first unit)

Examination topics

The performance assessment is carried out through active participation and the oral presentation as well as through a short test. The examination material results from the contents, presentations and compulsory readings of the course.
