Aims, contents and method of the course

Epidemiology and Public Health: Ethical, political and legal parameters in the area of health-related preventive/precaution measures: 1. Historical perspective on 'epidemiological transition' from infectious to non-infectious, chronic diseases in developing societes; implications for public health; 2. Fields of action of public health (for instance tobacco control, obesity epidemic, allergies); 3. Comparison of national and international perspectives on public health; 4. Legel regulations in Austria, role of the state, limits of state influence in the area of health; 5. Tension between individual liberty rights and health for all/common welfare from an ethical point of view; 6. Current public health research in Europe

Assessment and permitted materials

Anwesenheit, aktive Mitarbeit

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Becoming acquainted with the area of public health research and central research questions; Ethical and legal reflection, historical embedding, particularly in the context of measures during the Nazi regime.

Examination topics
