Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class covers the basic concepts and the most important aspects of international law and aims to support students preparing for their oral exams in international law as well as students interested in a comprehensive approach to international law. It deals with the formation of international law (its sources); its subjects; law of armed conflict; international criminal law; state responsibility; immunities; international dispute settlement; international economic law; international environmental law; Austria's position in international law since 1918.

Students are required to prepare the questions in the sylabus in preparation for each class. The lecturer will present the topic of each class himself but will also use the Socratic method to discuss certain aspects with the students.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students may achieve a grade by completing at least one of the exams. Four exams will be held and students may choose on which examination date they wish to write the exam. Students must achieve atleast 50% of available points to pass an exam. If a student does not pass the exam they may retake the exam provided that these is still an examination date available.

The exams will be held on a moodle plattform, however, students must register for each exam seperately on uspace. Students will be informed of the access to the exam after the end of the registration period for each exam, and have one week in which to complete the first exam.

The exam may cover all topics addressed in class and the mandatory readings.
