Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to discuss and apply the basic principles and rules of public international law, including dispute settlement, at the example of concrete public international law cases. This serves also as a preparation for the oral exam in public international law, both in the diploma study and in the IREWI-study.
Topics include the foundations and background of public international law, sources of public international law, public international law and national law, subjects of public international law, immunities and privileges, international investment law, basic legal principles of international relations, state responsibility, individual international responsibility.
Materials on specific public international law cases will be available on Moodle. Participants should read them ahead of the respective units in order to be prepared for questions and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active oral participation during class, E-learning quizzes at home for preparation ahead of each class ("preparation quizzes", 90 minutes, three trials), and short e-learning quizzes after each class ("participation quizzes", 15 minutes, one trial). A final written exam will be held in presence at the end of the semester (5 December 2024).
Materials permitted: All e-learning tests are open book, at the final exam you will be permitted to use Reinisch A. und Reisinger Coracini A. (Hrsg.), Österreichisches Handbuch des Völkerrechts, Band 2, 6. Auflage (Wien Manz 2021).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Written exam, e-learning quizzes and class participation must amount to 50% of the points achievable.
