Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to explore the basic structure and characteristics of Japanese information law, comparing it with EU information law.
First, the course introduces students to the history, background, and structures of Japanese law. Next, it considers media law, data protection law, platform regulation, and AI regulation in Japan, comparing them with corresponding laws and regulations in the EU. Finally, it explores the challenges and opportunities of Japanese information law.

Assessment and permitted materials

Class participation: 25 %, Short presentation: 25 %, Essay: 50 %

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation, a short presentation related to Japanese information law, and an essay that addresses questions provided by the instructor are required.

Examination topics

Essay materials will be provided in class.

Reading list

Literature related to the course will be provided on the learning platform and in class.
