Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims:This course serves as preparation for the EU law part of the MP Introduction to International Law (IREWI) / the EU Law Part of the FÜM 1 (the latter exam is held in German, however). After completing the course, students will be familiar with the basics of EU law and be able to apply their knowledge in the context of exam questions/cases of the MP Introduction to International Law / FÜM 1.Contents:Basic structure of the EU legal order (essential features, interaction between EU law and national law, legal protection, etc.), formal (organisational, procedural) and substantive EU law (fundamental freedoms, competition law).Disclaimer: The course serves as exam preparation, but cannot cover all contents completely. Additional, independent preparation for the module exam is required.Methods:Lecture, short case studies, revision questions. The course will be held in presence. Additionally, it will be streamed via ZOOM and recordings of each lecture will be made available on Moodle for the duration of the course.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment:Two written tests with open questions à 45 minutes:- Intermediate test on 15 December 2023 (subject to alterations)
- Final test on 19 January 2023 (subject to alterations)Oral participation in the course is voluntary, but will improve the grade.Permitted materials:- permitted materials that may be used during the tests are uncommented versions of the EU treaties such as: "Kodex International Legal Studies Studienausgabe", "Blackstone's EU Treaties & Legislation" as well as self-printed versions of the EU treaties (to be found on the EUR-Lex site http://eur-lex.europa.eu/collection/eu-law/treaties.html?locale=de)
- English dictionaryPermissible markings in the treaty texts:Colour highlighting and article references (e.g. "-> Art 263 TFEU") are permitted. Additional comments, annotations, keywords or information are not permitted. Other markings (strikeouts, underlining, symbols, etc.) are not permitted if they obviously only serve to circumvent the prohibition on commenting. The insertion of post-its is permitted, but the post-its may only be labelled with references to the respective treaty provision (e.g. Art. 263 TFEU), but not with headings or keywords (e.g. NOT "action for annulment").

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirements:- attendance at the first lecture or excused absence ***UPDATE from 6 November 2023: Due to the rescheduling of the first lecture, attendance is NOT mandatory***- obtaining more than 50% of the total score of one of the two written tests, i.e. more than 15 out of 30 points of one of these testsAssessment criteria:- A maximum score of 30 points can be achieved in each of the two tests.- If only one test is taken, the final grade is based on the number of points achieved on this test.- If both tests are taken, only the higher score counts towards the final grade.- An additional half point can be earned per unit through oral participation (improvement of the points achieved at the better of the two tests by a maximum of 3.5 points).- In addition, half a point can be earned in the period between two units through written participation in the Moodle student forum (further improvement of the points achieved at the better test by a maximum of 3 P).Grading scale:26.5 to 30 points = 1

The course covers the script by Thomas Jaeger, "Introduction to European Union Law, Foundations - Institutions - Enforcement - Internal Market Rules" (2021).
