Lecturers

Classes (iCal) - next class is marked with N

The lecture takes place digitally and mostly in asynchron form. There will be videos and written material for all contents on the Moodle page. These videos can then be watched anytime and as often as needed until October 31, 2023. Moreover there will be one or two digital live-session in every week of the lecture. In these live-sessions the students can pose questions about the mathematical contents of the lecture and deepen their understanding of the contents. For 3 video-lectures there will be approximately 90 minutes of live-session for questions. The idea is that the students have already seen the corresponding videos and can deepen their knowledge and clarify some question during the live-sessions (in a kind of flipped classroom setting). Detailed information (including the exact time of the live-sessions) can be found on the Moodle page of the lecture when the lecture starts on November 22nd 2022.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: students learn basic quantitative methods for applications in business and economics. The mathematical tools will be applied in exercises in the Exercises class that takes place parallel to the lecture.

Contents: one-dimensional analysis: sequences and series, real functions in one variable, continuity, some special functions such as exponential function and logarithm, differentiability and derivatives, study and sketching of curves, convexity and concavity, Taylor series, first and second order criteria for local extrema, introduction to integration theory, antiderivative, calculation of areas with integrals. Linear algebra: vectors, matrices, linear (in)dependence, inner product, euclidian norm, orthogonality of vectors, determinants of matrices, inverse matrix, introduction to systems of linear equations, eigen-values and eigen-vectors, definiteness of matrices, quadratic forms

Methods: In the lecture the theory will be presented and some basic examples will be explained. The students will get homework for the Execises class which deepen and supplement the theory. The solutions will be presented by students in the Exercises class "UE Übungen zu Mathematik 1, 4 ECTS, 2 SSt. (pi)" .

Assessment and permitted materials

Written digital exam. Important fact: separate registration for the exam is necessary, please note the deadlines for registration! Detailed information about the digital exam can be found one week before the exam date on the moodle-page of the corresponding exam. You get access to this moodle page about one week before the exam date IF (and ONLY IF) you are registered for this exam. Please READ THE INFO about the exam on the Moodle-page of the exam one week BEFORE THE DATE of the exam.
INFORMATION for EC Betriebswirtschaftliche Methoden: This is a Fachprüfung with slightly less content. Please read the information of the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A maximum of 60 points can be reached in the digital exam. Necessary points for a positive grade: 25.

Examination topics

Everything that is covered in the lecture, moreover everything that is covered in the exercises.
