Aims, contents and method of the course

The course introduces students to basic macroeconomics. They acquire an understanding of macroeconomic questions, terminology, and (macro-)economic policies. By the end of the course, students can critically reflect on the theories covered in class and will have an understanding of:
(1) The factors driving long-term economic growth
(2) The causes of business cycle fluctuations
(3) The operation of the financial sector
(4) Fiscal and monetary policy in the short- and medium-run
(5) Trade and exchange rates in open economies

The course consists of three main building blocks:
(1) Macroeconomic Accounts and aggregate data
(2) Economic Growth
(3) Business Cycles

Lectures will take place as scheduled on u:find. A teaching assistant will give an additional tutorial, where practical exercises are discussed. The time of the office hours is to be announced.

This lecture touches upon gender roles in the labor market, the distribution of income and wealth, and environmental concerns.

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation consists of the following components:
– Problem sets
– Online quizzes
– Midterm exam
– Final exam

The exams are closed-book.

Only selected problem sets will be graded. Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

Exams:
- Midterm: November 14, 2023, 15:00 in HS 1.
- Final: January 30, 2024, 15:00 in HS 1.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The evaluation consists of four components:
– 35% midterm exam
– 35% final exam
– 10% problem sets
– 20% online quizzes

The minimal requirement for a passing grade is to achieve 50% in total.

This course also touches upon gender roles in the labor market, the distribution of income and wealth, and environmental concerns.
