Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims at providing students with a basic understanding of the fundamental elements, aspects, and rules of international economic law with a focus on international trade law and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its basic principles will be described by reference to the respective articles in its trade agreements and case-law from the WTO dispute settlement system.
The relationship between the WTO and the EU common market (including free trade agreements such as CETA) will also be covered.

Assessment and permitted materials

– active participation in class (8 points), also (non-obligatory!) by presenting relevant news from the world of trade law (e.g. newspaper articles about tariff negotiations) during the sessions
Two exams in the final two sessions:
– The first consists of right/wrong, Single and Multiple Choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions (no materials allowed).
The second is a discussion of a hypothetical trade scenario (open book).
