Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims: Bachelor students become familiar with the basic tools and models of microeconomic analysis. At the end of the semester, students are able to apply equilibrium analysis, the principles of optimizing behavior, and comparative statics to simple economic questions in the framework of perfectly competitive markets.Contents: Preferences and utility functions, utility maximization problems, demand functions, equivalent and compensating variation; production technology, cost functions, profit maximization, supply function; perfectly competitive markets, demand and supply, competitive equilibrium, general equilibrium, welfare theorems; imperfectly competitive markets, monopoly, price discrimination; if time permits decisions under risk.Method: The lecturer presents the main contents and introductory examples in class. The focus of the lecture, however, is on the difficulties that students encounter when going through the materials. Students are expected to prepare before every lecture with help of precise readings and questions specified in advance. Materials and problem sets are available in the Moodle platform. Part of the problems are discussed in class either in groups or with student presentations. Students are expected to turn in some of the problems solved in class for credit at the end of the lecture.
Assessment and permitted materials
Two closed-book, written exams (midterm and final) and a class grade. In class students are expected to actively participate in the discussion of problems and have often the possibility to turn in some of the questions for credit. These are specified during the lecture.Exam dates:
--> Midterm on Thursday May 2nd, 2019 from 16:45 to 18:15 in lecture room 6 (1st floor)
--> Final on Thursday June 27th, 2019 from 15:00 to 16:30 in lecture room 1 (ground floor)
--> Midterm on Thursday May 2nd, 2019 from 16:45 to 18:15 in lecture room 6 (1st floor)
--> Final on Thursday June 27th, 2019 from 15:00 to 16:30 in lecture room 1 (ground floor)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The different exams and problems will contribute as follows to the final grade: Midterm 30%; Final 40%; Problems 30% (whereby the best two problem grades count 10% and the two lower grades count 5%).For a minimum passing grade students need 50% of total points. Grading will be as follows: 0-49% - fail; 50-59% - pass; 60-69% - satisfactory; 70-84% - good; 85-100% - very good.
