Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces students to current issues in international macroeconomics.

The first part of the course will be devoted to lectures where we will analyze state-of-the-art open economy models to understand the determinants of cross-border capital flows as well as of nominal and real exchange rates. We will also study monetary policy in this context. All models will be studied theoretically, and, in separate meetings in a computer room, also be solved numerically.

The second part of the course will be devoted to reading and discussing together current research papers in international macroeconomics.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade is composed of three elements, each of which counts 33%. The first element is a problem set to be handed in at the end of the first part of the lecture. The second element is a presentation of a research paper during the second part of the lecture. The third element is a final exam which will be written at the end of the lecture.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A prerequisite for the course is the course "Growth and Business Cycles", or equivalent. As some parts of the course will deal with numerical implementation, it is useful to have some first knowledge about Matlab.

The main textbook for the first part of the course is Open Economy Macroeconomics, 2017 Princeton University Press, by Martin Uribe and Stephanie Schmitt-Grohe.
